the white tiger by aravind adiga

Aravind is a new young writer from India and I believe this may be his debut novel, at least in English. He uses an interesting device for the narrative - as a letter to a seemingly preposterous recipient. That jarring feature gradually fades as the plot develops. The story almost runs away with itself and it is hard to identify with anyone in a likable way - perhaps a risky approach as the reader might lose engagement.

But I found the gritty, dark tale moved with enough pace to keep me on the hook to the finish. The books paints a picture of India that might be hard to accept but I believe that in such a populous country well known for its corruptibility an anything goes adventure is surely possible.
