Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. It follows a Korean family through multiple generations, and it is a heartbreaking, beautifully written glimpse into an entire culture that is often forgotten about, especially in regards to WWII.
You are stuck on a deserted island and can choose one book to keep with you. What do you choose?
The complete works of Michel de Montaigne. His writing has a profound effect on the way I see myself and others. Also, it is so complex that I would never run out of things to think about.
Do you have a favourite quote from an author or influencer?
"I must be a mermaid, Rango. I have no fear of depths and a great fear of shallow living." - Anaïs Nin
What are some of the strangest books you have ever read?
All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood. I won't even try to explain the plot, but the writing is incredible and the storyline completely roped me in.
What author should everyone read at least once in his or her lifetime?
Jane Austen. Her work has had such a lasting effect on literature everywhere that, chances are, it will make you a better reader.
What book should everyone read at least once in his or her lifetime?
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. It forced me to acknowledge race and gender imbalances and realize that I wanted to do something to make the world a better place.
Do you have any advice when it comes to reading?
If you aren't getting anything out of a book, don't waste your time struggling through it. Life is too short to read books you hate.
